It may depend on their target audience. In figures released this week, Publishers Information Bureau reported impressive, double digit gains in revenue and ad pages for magazines targeting Latino readers. Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the US, comprising 16% of the population, and advertisers have taken notice in a big way.

Meredith’s SIEMPRE MUJER, with a rate base of 550,000, saw advertising revenue jump by 51% in 2011 over 2010, and a 32% hike in ad pages. Parenting pub SER PADRES, another Meredith property, has a rate base of 800,000 and upped ad revenue by 17%, with 13% growth in ad pages. LATINA*, an English-language women’s magazine from Latina Media Ventures, experienced a similar rise, taking in 15% more in ad revenue and selling 13% more ad pages. Time Inc’s PEOPLE EN ESPANOL racked up an added 37% in ad dollars in 2011, and boasted an increase of 32% in ad pages.

Is it any wonder that COSMOPOLITAN* last month announced plans for COSMOPLITAN LATINA, a new bicultural English-language glossy? An eagerly awaited test issue is scheduled for release in May 2012.

So for freelancer writers and PR pros trying to find new prospects in a shifting market, you don’t have to look far. Opportunity is here, and it looks like it’s moving to a Latin beat.

LADIES’ HOME JOURNAL* this week announced a plan to start incorporating user-generated material into the print magazine. Beginning with the March issue, LHJ will feature editorial content harvested from its digital and social media channels, including the LHJ website, its Facebook page and DivineCaroline.com.

Cynics might wonder if this is a cost-cutting measure, like the plethora of TV reality shows, which are cheaper to produce than scripted television. But LHJ claims it will pay the amateur contributors “professional rates,” and that the magazine still will use fact-checkers and subject matter experts.

So, what’s behind LHJ’s new move, and what does it mean for the magazine’s relationship with professional freelancers? Wooden Horse contacted publisher Meredith’s executive director of communications, Patrick Taylor, to get some insight.

Taylor says the changes “will not mean that we will no longer use any freelance writers,” or that they won’t have “deep editorial expertise and staff.” The magazine will continue to have columns and stories “written by both internal and external editorial contributors.”

As far as the reasoning behind the plan, Taylor says the switch is designed to “deepen the brand’s engagement with its readers and tap into the growing network and impact of social media conversation,” and “to combine the authenticity of user-generated information” with “highly cultivated and curated content.”

In a media environment where everyone-especially those in the coveted younger demographic-has a Facebook page, Twitter feed and a blog, where it’s all about them, LHJ seems to be going to make it all about them-and hope that’s enough to keep them coming back.

And if it’s successful, can we expect other magazines to follow suit?

LADIES’ HOME JOURNAL* will begin creating print material from user generated content, such as consumer posts on DevineCaroline.com (a Meredith sibling), the LHJ website and Facebook page and other digital channels. The magazine still plans to use fact-checkers and subject matter experts, but Editor-in-Chief Sally Lee is enthusiastic about “content creation that begins with a reader,” instead of with the editor. Lee says the plan is to pay professional rates to amateur contributors. The editorial change coincides with a redesign of the magazine, beginning with the March issue, and includes a new cover design and logo…

LONNY* reportedly is not publishing at this time and has furloughed its staff, due to cash flow issues. Despite tough times, Editor-in-Chief Michelle Adams insists that an “exciting announcement” is coming soon…

Media Auditor BPA Worldwide issues amended rules for measuring digital magazine audiences…

THE PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIAN, a long-running social justice magazine, ceased publishing on January 1 after 189 years in print, and the website ends on January 15…

SUPERMARKET NEWS magazine relaunched its website with a new design and added content; http://supermarketnews.com…

THE NEW REPUBLIC* is being shopped around for potential buyers or investors by The Blackstone Group. Owners are hoping for a cash infusion or sale. The political biweekly has been in print since 1914…

BC LIVING magazine will debut a redesigned website with expanded sections; www.bcliving.ca…

Hearst magazines brought in Lynne Palazze, lpalazzi@hearst.com, as editorial recruiter, beginning January 23. Palazzi will focus on recruiting for entry and mid-level positions…

NEWSWEEK*/DAILY BEAST will lose John Solomon, NewsBeast editor for news and investigations…

SELF* promoted Meaghan Murphy, meaghan_murphy@condenast.com, from fitness director to deputy editor…

SELF* promoted Nicole Catanese, Nicole_catanese@condenast.com, from senior beauty features editor to fitness director, replacing Meaghan Murphy…

BETTER HOMES & GARDENS* named Oma Blaise Ford, oma.ford@meredith.com, as the new executive editor…

TOWN & COUNTRY* promoted Danielle Stein, dstein@hearst.com, from features editor to features director…

EVERY DAY WITH RACHAEL RAY* lost associate lifestyle editor Alison Caporimo…

READER’S DIGEST* snagged Alison Caporimo, Alison.caporimo@rd.com, as an associate editor…

LUCKY* picked up new beauty assistant Emily Gaynor, emily_gaynor@condenast.com…

TIME OUT CHICAGO* said goodbye to John Dugan, senior web editor and nightlife editor…

SOLID STATE TECHNOLOGY magazine said goodbye to senior tech editor Debra Vogler. No replacement has been named…
