Rumors Swirl as Forbes.com CEO Leaves

Jim SpanfellerFORBES made it three for three, when the last of the three major business magazines made its own gossip-producing announcement: Its website CEO Jim Spanfeller is leaving.

He is widely credited to have built the site into a powerhouse with 40 million unique visitors per month across Forbes.com, ForbesTraveler.com, Investopoedia.com, RealClearPolitics.com, RealClearMarkets.com, Real Clear Sports, Forbes Business and Finance Blog Network.

Forbes logoSpanfeller says he is leaving to form his own media management company, but pundits wonder if he wasn’t forced out by a new cost cutting boardmember from investor Elevation Partners, the private equity group that purchased a large minority stake in Forbes three years ago.  As proof, the fact that WSJ.com has almost caught up with forbes.com in unique viewers (according to compete.com) is offered.  True or not, the Forbes employees, like those at BusinessWeek and Fortune, are probably tossing and turning at night.
