American Media Inc Continues Painful Cost-Cutting

Publisher American Media Inc (NATIONAL ENQUIRER, STAR) is suffering from the same advertising challenges as many other publishers, but it is also trying to meet the demands of a $1 billion debt it racked up in a purchasing spree a few years ago.  In addition to other cost-cutting measures, these magazines are the latest targets:

Natural Health magazineNATURAL HEALTH will lower its frequency from 10 issues per year to eight, starting in 2010.  Its publisher, Eileen Chiafair, and its editor, Mary Bolster, have been asked to leave the company.  The magazine will be produced by the staff of FIT PREGNANCY, which used to produce Mom & Baby.

MOM & BABY, a five year-old biannual distributed in doctors’ waiting rooms, has been suspended.  Its rate base was 500,000 issues and the company hopes to re-start it when advertisers return.
