Even Digital Magazines Have Problems

JIM BAEN’S UNIVERSE, the bimonthly online fantasy and science fiction magazine, will cease publication with its April 2010 issue.

Jim Baen's UniverseIt launched in 2006 as a digital magazine by maverick publisher Jim Baen.  Although sold by subscription, its primary funding – according to a note on the website by editor Eric Flint – was the related Universe club.  It was started to offer an initial “surge of income” but it continued to be “the source of about half of our annual income, from beginning to end,” according to Flint.

“The situation simply became untenable,” Flint writes and the decision to close the magazine was made early enough not to short-change subscribers, to “orphan” stories or to leave writers unpaid.
