Budget Travel Magazine’s Demise Exaggerated?

Budget Travel magazine Dec 2009/Jan 2010 cover

There has been much buzz surrounding the possible shut down of this discount vacation magazine.  Ad revenue has dropped 33% for the magazine, and sources within the parent company, The Washington Post, say offices are being cleared out and lay-offs are happening.

As of Wednesday, November 18, 2009, the magazine staff was still working and planning their February edition, although executives from the magazine are reportedly meeting to discuss its fate.  Media Jobs Daily reports that the advertising department was told to hold their ads for the February addition.

No doubt, there will be lots of additional chatter coming on this development.

Update November 21: “We are not shutting down or laying off staff,” a statement from the publisher says.  “It’s business as usual at Budget Travel and we are currently working to produce the February issue and beyond.  It’s also important to note that we have a growing and engaged audience which, in this difficult economic climate, is no small feat.”
