FIRST AMERICAN ART Bridges Gap Between Academia and General Public

First American artFIRST AMERICAN ART is a new magazine that explores all aspects of indigenous American art, from the visual to the literary. Its focus is on indigenous art of the Americas from an indigenous perspective, presenting indigenous critical theory in a way that bridges the gap between academia and the general public.

The magazine’s goal is to provide a common platform for native and non-native academics, art professionals, artists, collectors, and other readers to seriously investigate and celebrate indigenous American art, from ancestral to 21st century artwork.

It publishes reviews of Native American art shows, events and public art; and profiles of established and emerging artists from a wide range of media, geographic region and tribal affiliation. According to its writer’s guidelines, in particular First American Art is seeking serious critical analyses of indigenous art by indigenous reviewers, and also articles about art venues in tribal communities, especially rural areas; and native art in the international art arena. Issue 1 will come out in August, and the magazine will be published on a quarterly basis beginning with issue 2 in early 2014. Editors are seeking queries for issue 1, especially art show reviews and book reviews, until the deadline, May 21. They also accept indigenous language submissions on a case-by-case basis. At home with affluence: A new luxe shelter supplement is set to make an entrance

DEPARTURES HOME + DESIGN, a new shelter supplement, will debut with the May/June issue of DEPARTURES* magazine.

The new glossy is “dedicated to the celebration of material comforts and the art of living.”  Editorial content will cover architecture, design, home furnishings, artwork and entertaining.

Editor-in-Chief Richard Story, richard.story@aexp.com and @MrDepartures, says the offshoot was “created for readers who are the ultimate luxury design enthusiasts.” With a closed circulation of 500,000, the publication will be polybagged alongside Departures, and distributed to American Express Platinum and Centurion cardholders in targeted cities.

Writers beware: Conde Nast looks to cash in on content

Yes, it is still about content.

Condé Nast CEO Charles Townsend talked this week about the company going in to 2013. He mentioned a rate-base increase for several brands; making more money from subscriptions, and forecasted the success of the Condé Nast Entertainment division (CNE.)

“Our print business, even in the worst moment, continues to grow and the margins are sharper and the gross profit margins are mouthwatering,” he said, according to wwd.com. “When this economy recovers, the print business is going to be on fire.”

But then, he said the same thing at the beginning of 2012, which was going to be “exceptionally sunny.” We now know that it wasn’t so with layoffs and most everybody taking budget cuts, and the web business coming in at about half the rate the company expected (15% growth versus 30%.)

And he’s hot on CNE, which develops, creates, produces and distributes original television, film and digital initiatives based on the company’s brands. Articles in Conde Nast magazines have already been turned into movies (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Eat, Pray Love” and the just released “Argo”) – but not by Conde Nast. That will change now with the creation of CNE.

CNE President Dawn Ostroff has said her division intends to take “some of the great stories from our magazines and do them for the screen ourselves.” She also has pointed out that there are some 80,000 articles in the Condé Nast archive as well as new content every week in their various magazines. All of which are now being read and considered for new endeavors.

But, Townsend said, there are still questions about who owns these stories, the company or the writer? According to wwd.com, “many contracts are expected to come up for review by the end of the year. Townsend said Condé is still working through the intricacies of those questions and clarified it’s trying to propose a partnership, not outright ownership. That means ‘more income for contributors but also ourselves,’ he said.”

Do we really believe he’ll be that charitable?

British export: Chef Jamie Oliver transports his food glossy across the pond

JAMIE MAGAZINE, the eponymous glossy from TV celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, will launch a North American edition on November 14.

Editorial content includes recipes, travel articles, helpful hints and tips, and ‘The Guide,’ a regular back-of-book section featuring “ideas and techniques to make you a better cook.”  Each issue offers a mix of vegetarian, gluten free and kids recipes.

A new Indiana bimonthly puts the focus on local Catholic culture

TODAY’S CATHOLIC LIFE MAGAZINE, a regional publication from the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, will launch on the first weekend in November.

The new bimonthly will include articles on traditions, culture, events and personalities in the local diocese, with the inaugural issue focused on Christmas.

An initial circulation of 10,000 is planned, with a limited number of free issues distributed to parishes, schools and universities in the diocese.  The diocese’ director of communication, Sean McBride, smcbride@diocesefwsb.org, oversees the publication.  A full editorial calendar and additional information can be found on the website at www.diocesefwsb.org/tclife.
